Sportcity Riders Take Their Flippers To Brighouse
Written by Ian Bury
Friday, 10 July 2009

On Wednesday 9 Sportcity riders went swimming (sorry cycling) in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. This popular event with good prizes is an anual haunt for our riders as it is very well run, not too far away and gives the riders a chance to race in front of good crowds.

First up was the senior 3rd and 4th cat race which Jack Penrice, Sam Boast and Martin Woffindin represented Sportcity Velo. It was wet causing lots of fun on the corners and I must say a bit of a job was done by our riders! Martin managed to sneak off the front with about 8 laps to go, Sam and Jack blocked extremely well allowing Martin to maintain his lead and win by a significant margin. Jack just lost out to 2nd position and Sam got 5th. Two riders on the podium in this one.

Next event was the youth race on the same course and just as wet. In this we had Chris Latham, Josh Penrice, James Berryman, Lewis Barry, Melissa Bury and Jess Anderson in the U16s and Jake Ragan in the U14s.

Chris and Josh got away in the leading bunch quite quickly, James managed to miss the start so was half a lap down form the whistle and our girls were at the front of the girls race. Lewis stayed with the leading bunch for a number of laps before the weather and the speed saw him drop back to the chasing group.

A very short race of 16 mins which I think everybody was thankful (especially me) because not all had snorkels led a full podium of Sportcity riders Chris 1st u16 Boy, Melissa 1st U16 Girl, Jake 1st U14 Boy with both Josh and Jess finishing 2nd in their categories.

The commentator got very excited about the Sportcity riders and made a number of comments on the quality of their cycling!

Well done

Rochdale Town Centre Crit Race
Written by Ian Bury
Sunday, 05 July 2009

On Wednesday night a number of our riders rode the town centre crit at Rochdale before the big boys raced the elite race. The course was very up and down!

Matt Holmes was very up and down afterwards (need to get your tea just a little bit earlier if you are going to bounce round on a bike!)

Great rides by a number of our riders Matt (4th) and Jack Bowyer just behind him in 5th and Sam Boast in 19th

Brighouse next week.......

Well Done Girls

Jess and Melissa rode with the senior ladies up and down the Prom at Blackpool on Friday night. 35 starters with a very good prize list.

Despite only being 14 and 15 they rode very well placing high in the prize money.

Jess, actually the youngest rider in the race, got 10th and M just pipped her by half a wheel to get 9th.

£40 each that will help with the petrol I think not.

There was also a round of the national circuit races at Blackpool this weekend. Highest placing (sorry don't know u16 boys) I think was Jake Ragan in 2nd in the U14 boys competition, Clare Gore continuing to represent us well finished 3rd u14 girl.

Newcastle Rescheduled Omnium
Written by Rebecca
Monday, 29 June 2009

WOW!! It finally happened - the sun shone ALL day, the racing was fast and furious - it was a fantastic event to watch with over 100 riders as it was a Northern and Midlnad qualification event.  But as has been the case in other rounds it was almost a total whitewash, or should I say pink wash and blue wash, by Sportscity and Eastlands Velo riders.  The results are now on line - but in short:

U10 G   1st Kim Baptista

U 12 B  1st Matt Walls, 2nd Tom Rotherham

U 14 G 1st Clare Gore, 2nd Megan Boyd, 3rd India Penrice

U 14 B  1st Jake Ragan, 2nd Chris Lawless

U 16 G 1st Jess Crampton, 2nd Jess Anderson, 3rd Melissa Bury, 4th Lisa Daly, 5th Hannah Layland

U 16 B 1st Matt Rotherham, 2nd Jack Penrice, 3rd Luke Boulton

It was combined with the Midland region and Jake Ragan, Matt Rotherham and Jess Crampton took overall first places.

It's looking like we will have a good contingent at the Omnium Finals to be held at Manchester.  WELL DONE EVERYONE!!

Written by Ian Bury
Monday, 15 June 2009
5pm a late start on Saturday 13th June for Lewis Barry & Hannah Layland as they both did the GHS qualifier 10 Mile time trial on the undulating J2/1 course in Cheshire.
Unfortunately, Lewis was struggling with Hayfever and was feeling really unwell just over half way round and couldn't carry on.
Hannah will qualify for the final in the Midlands in September, with her time (PB) of 25.00 minutes.
Great Ride Hannah.
